Hello Neonatologists,
Is routine nasogastric aspiration of the stomach done by you, if so why?

Do you mean at the time of delivery? If yes, our answer is No.
If you mean before tube feeding: nurses/assisting nurses check the NG tube position (and gastric retentions) before feeds.

In NICU the nurse who feeds and takes care of the baby regulates and looks for the NG tube when necessary , also at the time of delivery the NG aspiration is done by the nurse.

We check NGT/OGT aspirate prior to EACH feeding. 1-4 ml is returned to lower incidence of wasting electrolytes, "discolored" aspirate is discarded.
