Hello!
I guess there's no such thing as the "best" antibiotic yet, bacterial spectra varies between regions.
We use bensyl-penicillin and gentamycin if we choose to give antibiotics at admission.

In our NICU we use Ampicillin and Gentamicin as the basic prophylactic antibiotics
If we suspect any infection we do different cultures and decide acccording to the results of the cultures

As everybody saying there is no such thing as a best antibiotic, it depnds on the bacterial pattern in your unit.
But most of the places using Ampicillin and Gentamicin as this combination covers almost all the usual bacteria.
We r using the same combination. There was an artical in Neonatology today in 2007.
In addition to that antifungal prophylaxis is also recommended.
