Good morning eveyone,
I am curious, Is anyone else seeing an increased number of IUGR/SGA premies with and increased IRT on newborn screening? Since starting my fellowship, I've notice that frequently our SGA babies are having abnormally evelated IRTs on newborn screen.

Have a great day
Kelly

hi , what is IRT?

I'm sorry about using an abbreviation the might not be universal. IRT is immunoreactive trypsinogen

Interesting observation!
Do you routinely check IRT in SGA infants?
(We don't)

Immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) is assessed on our newborn state screen, to screen for CF.

Have you looked for the causes for fault positive causes for the investigation

Could this finding be related to the blood flow re-distribution in utero of IUGR infants - that the reduced circulation in the abdominal organs somehow lead to elevated IRT? Have you checked Pubmed, your question may be a nice and well defined research idea?!

hi all
IRT is a simple tool for population screening that has been used several years ago in France; if it returns positive,it should be confirmed by a sweat chloride testing and eventually by molecular biology. A lot of false positive results have been described but I'm notaware of any relation to IUGR/ SGA. Keep us knowing results of your searches please.
